When Nickdee and Moh Spice shared the decks at Cocoa Boutique Nyali, the whole venue shook. Here's my review of the Mombasa Exp Takeover Experience.

Let me just say this upfront: if you weren't at the Mombasa Exp Takeover Experience at Cocoa Boutique in Nyali, you missed something special. And I'm not saying that to make you feel bad — I'm saying it because I genuinely wish more people could have been there to feel the energy in that room.

The Hype

When I first saw the poster — Mombasa Exp Takeover, Nickdee and Moh Spice as the main DJs, at Cocoa Boutique in Nyali — I knew this was going to be big. These aren't just any DJs. Nickdee and Moh Spice are two of the most respected names in the Mombasa nightlife scene, and the idea of them sharing the decks on the same night was enough to get anyone excited.

But hype is one thing. Delivery is another. And let me tell you — they delivered.

The Venue

Cocoa Boutique in Nyali is already one of the more stylish spots on the north coast. It's got that boutique vibe — intimate, well-designed, with good lighting and a sound system that actually does justice to the music. It's not a massive club, and that's exactly what made this event work.

The space was packed but not uncomfortably so. There was energy in every corner of the venue. The layout worked perfectly — a main dance floor, a bar area that was well-stocked and efficiently run, and a few lounge spots for people who needed a break from dancing.

As the night went on, the venue seemed to shrink — not because it was getting more crowded, but because the energy was so concentrated that it felt like the whole room was vibrating.

Nickdee

Dj Nickdee

Nickdee came on first, and from the very first track, he had the crowd locked in. His set was a masterclass in reading the room. He didn't just play bangers — he built a journey. Started with some deep house and afrobeats to warm things up, then gradually turned up the heat as the crowd grew.

What I love about Nickdee's DJing is his versatility. He can go from smooth, melodic tracks to hard-hitting bangers without it feeling jarring. The transitions are seamless. You don't realize the vibe has shifted until you look around and everyone's dancing twice as hard as they were five minutes ago.

He played a mix that felt very Mombasa — afrobeats, amapiano, genge, and a few surprise tracks that had the crowd screaming. There was a moment when he dropped a track that I won't name (you had to be there), and the entire venue lost it. I'm talking full-body jumping, phone cameras everywhere, people hugging strangers kind of energy.

Moh Spice

If Nickdee was the warm-up that got everyone in the zone, Moh Spice was the main event that turned the zone into an inferno.

When Moh Spice took over the decks, the energy in the room shifted instantly. You could feel it — that moment when the DJ changes and everyone knows something bigger is about to happen. And he did not disappoint.

Moh Spice's style is aggressive, energetic, and absolutely relentless. He doesn't give you time to catch your breath. Every track hits harder than the last. The bass was shaking the floor. The lights were flashing. And the crowd — the crowd was absolutely electric.

He played a set that was pure fire — amapiano bangers, genge classics, and a few tracks that I'm pretty sure he mixed live on the spot. The man is a technician behind the decks, and watching him work was like watching a musician play an instrument. Every transition, every drop, every build-up was calculated and executed perfectly.

There was a moment — probably around midnight — when both Nickdee and Moh Spice were on stage together, back to back, trading tracks like they were in a friendly battle. The crowd was going absolutely insane. I've been to a lot of events in Mombasa, and this was easily one of the top three DJ performances I've ever witnessed.

The Crowd

The crowd at the Mombasa Exp Takeover was exactly the kind of crowd you want at an event like this. Young, energetic, dressed to impress, and there for the music. No drama, no nonsense — just good vibes and great energy.

I saw people who had clearly come straight from work, still in their office clothes but ready to dance. I saw groups of friends who had planned their outfits for weeks. I saw couples who were clearly on dates and having the time of their lives. And I saw solo attendees who came in alone and left with a whole new group of friends.

That's the kind of crowd that makes an event special. When everyone is there for the same reason — to have a good time — the whole atmosphere changes.

The Music

The music at this event was a love letter to Mombasa's nightlife scene. We're talking:

  • Amapiano — The dominant sound of the night, and for good reason. The log drums were shaking the entire venue
  • Afrobeats — Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido — the crowd sang along to every word
  • Genge — Because you can't have a Mombasa party without genge. The classics had everyone losing their minds
  • Bongo Flava — A few Tanzanian tracks mixed in for that East African flavor
  • Surprise drops — Both DJs threw in unexpected tracks that had the crowd screaming

The sound system at Cocoa Boutique deserves its own mention. It was loud, clear, and the bass was hitting exactly right. You could feel the music in your chest without it being uncomfortably loud. That's a rare balance, and the venue nailed it.

The Drinks and Service

The bar was well-stocked and the service was surprisingly efficient for how packed the place was. I didn't wait more than a few minutes for my drinks, which is impressive for a night this busy. Prices were reasonable for a Nyali venue — cocktails in the KES 500-800 range, beers around KES 300-500.

The Vibe

Exp Mombasa

If I had to describe the vibe of the Mombasa Exp Takeover in one word, it would be electric.

From the moment Nickdee started his set to the final track that Moh Spice played, the energy never dropped. There were no dead moments, no awkward lulls, no points where people were checking their phones instead of dancing. Everyone was locked in from start to finish.

And that's a testament to the DJs, the venue, the organizers, and the crowd. When all four of those elements align, you get something special. Something that people talk about for weeks after. Something that makes you check your phone the next morning hoping there's already a date for the next one.

What Could Be Better

Mombasa Exp

I'll keep it real — this event was nearly perfect, but there are always small things:

  • More space — The venue was packed, and while that added to the energy, a slightly larger space would have given people more room to move
  • Longer event — Honestly, I wanted more. When the last track played, I was ready for another two hours

But these are the complaints of someone who had an amazing time and just wanted it to last longer.

The Verdict

The Mombasa Exp Takeover Experience at Cocoa Boutique was one of the best nightlife events I've attended on the Kenyan coast this year. Nickdee and Moh Spice delivered a back-to-back DJ performance that was nothing short of spectacular, the venue was perfect for the vibe, and the crowd brought an energy that made the whole night unforgettable.

If you're in Mombasa and you care about nightlife, music, or just having a genuinely good time, you need to be at the next Mombasa Exp event. No excuses.

I'm already telling everyone I know to clear their schedules for the next one. Because if this was any indication, the next Mombasa Exp Takeover is going to be even bigger.
